Avoiding a Scam Locksmith

Locksmith scams usually target home and vehicle owners when they are in the need of assistance the most, exploiting vulnerability in order to gouge as much money as possible. In order to avoid hiring a scam or thief locksmith in order to solve your lockout problem, it’s essential to follow these tips:

Look for a really Local Locksmith

Make sure that the Locksmith in question names the specific services they offer by name, and has a stable legal name for the business. If the business has ti’s address listed, make sure to Google the address and make sure that no other businesses use the same address.

Check the Locksmiths’ ID and License

Make sure to ask for identification when they arrive, and a locksmith licence (if you live in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma , Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, or Virginia – where they are legally required to carry a license.) Be careful around locksmiths who claim license in states where it is NOT required. A trustworthy locksmith will also ask you for identification before performing any locksmith service to verify that you’re the rightful owner of the locks.

Always get a cost estimate

Make sure that the cost estimate that you receive from the locksmith is what they actually charge you. Scam locksmiths will promise one rate and gouge the price up when they actually arrive. Don’t trust locksmiths that promise 10 or 15 dollar services – this is simply too cheap, and indicates a scam service.

Be careful of drilling your lock

Be wary of locksmiths who instantly recommend replacing your lock or drilling it. Drilling is usually only necessary for high security locks, and most experienced locksmiths will have the necessary skills to unlock any kind of door.

Make sure to ask these questions over the phone to verify trustworthiness:

  • What is your location?

  • Do you want a photo of the lock?

  • What process will you use to get into my home or vehicle? Do you need to drill the lock>

  • Can you give me an estimate, and will this price change due to any factors?

  • Do you need cash or can I pay with a check or credit card?

  • What’s the name of the Locksmith who will be arriving?
