It is undeniable that we currently live in a surveillance culture.\u00a0 Look anywhere in New York City, there is a camera pointed at us.\u00a0 There\u2019s the CCTV camera from the store across the street and the camera in the phone you hold.\u00a0 There\u2019s a camera in your laptop and a camera in the taxi you\u2019re taking home.\u00a0 We are surrounded by cameras and we don\u2019t even think twice about it.<\/p>\n

In a way, surveillance has become part of our everyday life.\u00a0 No one thinks about the possibility of an invasion of privacy whenever they turn on their laptop.\u00a0 And yet, the potential is there.\u00a0 Anyone with the right knowledge can hack in and switch on your webcam if it benefits them.\u00a0 Is it illegal?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 But can it be done?\u00a0 Yes.<\/p>\n

The real question is: what\u2019s done with all of this information?\u00a0 Or maybe: what can<\/em> be done with this information?\u00a0 The TV show \u201cPerson of Interest\u201d takes the latter question on a test drive with a machine that can access every camera in New York City and compile the information to spot potential terrorists.\u00a0 So that answers what could possibly be done.\u00a0 But what should be done?<\/p>\n

I suppose it\u2019s a matter of personal opinion whether you feel safer with all this surveillance or less so.\u00a0 Civil rights activists claim it is an invasion of privacy.\u00a0 Using this, the authorities can find out details of your life even though you\u2019re not a suspect.\u00a0 If they can tap into your computer or your phone, they will always know what you\u2019re doing.\u00a0 After all, if we\u2019re not on the computer nowadays, we are glued to our phones and iPods.<\/p>\n

Companies already use a form of mass surveillance on consumers.\u00a0 Things like Google Chrome and Facebook track the things you look up and then tailor advertisements to your interests.\u00a0 If you look up recipes for pasta, it is very likely that an ad for an Italian cookbook will pop up on the next website you go on.\u00a0 Supermarkets and drugstores use the information given when consumers sign up for loyalty programs and trade them to track shopping habits.<\/p>\n

Considering this, surveillance culture seems like an incredible invasion of privacy.\u00a0 In theory, you make a move and someone else will know.\u00a0 Anything you look up online will be documented.\u00a0 You can\u2019t do anything without being watched.\u00a0 However, that\u2019s only the extreme case.<\/p>\n

And yet, surveillance culture keeps us safe.\u00a0 Our databases of DNA and fingerprints are what law enforcement use to catch criminals.\u00a0 Facial recognition helps us find evasive lawbreakers.\u00a0 Security cameras record illegal acts without being noticed.\u00a0 It is becoming harder and harder not to be seen.<\/p>\n

Surveillance culture as it is now has its pros as it has cons.\u00a0 Security cameras are useful for a variety of reasons, especially if you own a store.\u00a0 You can\u2019t keep an eye on the entire place the whole time.\u00a0 Not only can it see where you cannot, it also gives people the feeling of being watched.\u00a0 If someone is about to steal, they will most likely try to find the cameras.\u00a0 If they see one directly pointed at them it\u2019ll probably deter them from theft.<\/p>\n

Or perhaps you live in a dangerous neighborhood.\u00a0 On top of a security system, a CCTV has several purposes.\u00a0 If something does happen, it\u2019ll be recorded making it easier to catch the person in question.<\/p>\n

Of course, CCTV in NYC aren\u2019t restricted to illegal activities.\u00a0 You can set it up so that you can watch your children play in the backyard while you\u2019re in the kitchen.\u00a0 You can also check up on your home from your office if you are feeling worried.\u00a0 With the advancement in surveillance technology nowadays, anything is possible.\u00a0 While some may argue about the invasion of privacy, it really depends on the safeness and security you feel.\u00a0 After all, feeling safe is subjective.<\/p>\n
