Rekey or Replace Master Keyed Locks?

Master locks are a fantastic way to implement security focused key control at your commercial property. In this blog entry, the master key installation experts here at SOS Locksmith will provide some detail as to the proper scenarios in which master keyed locks should either be rekeyed, or fully replaced.

When should master key locks be changed?

There’s a few main reasons to change locks that have been universally keyed:

  1. Change your master keyed lock when you move to a new house. The keys you may have been provided upon moving could very well have duplicates or spares that are floating around with strangers who potentially have criminal motives.

  2. Change your locks if you lose your keys or if they become stolen. Those keys could easily fall into the hands of burglars.

  3. Change locks after a bad break-up or divorce, as this situation is associated with property crime.

  4. Change lock if you find yourself the unfortunate victim of a burglary. Make sure to install a new set of locks ASAP.

  5. Change master keyed locks if the lock mechanism sustains serious damage.

When should master keyed locks be rekeyed?

There’s some situations in which it’s more practical and affordable to rekey a master keyed lock. If all the locks contain the same variety of keyhole and come with their own key, you can rekey the lock to allow for a group of keys to open them all. If you lose a copy of the old key, you can easily rekey the lock rendering the previous key unusable. When you move into a new house, rekeying can ensure that no previous tenant can get into the property.
