Hurricane Sandy left thousands of people in New York City and the Tri-State area devastated. A lack of preparation for the storm caused a lot of people to be left without food, water and other necessities. Although we have no control over a natural disaster, we can lessen the impact it has on us by preparing a storm safety kit. You can customize your safety kit to meet your particular needs.
(1) It’s important to have bottles of clean drinking water that will last throughout the storm. It’s recommended to have enough water to last for three days.
(2) You need to have food that doesn’t need to be refrigerated and will not spoil. Canned fruits, vegetables, meats and beans are all non-perishable food items that can go in your storm safety kit. You should have a can opener handy to open the canned foods.
(3) Often times during a storm, homes lose electrical power, so it’s important to have a flashlight, a battery operated radio and additional batteries in your storm safety kit.
