Door Lock Problems that Our Locksmiths See the Most

The professional lock repair service people at SOS Locksmith understand how frustrating it is when you can’t open your own door locks. You might check over and over again if you have the right key and find that even when you do the lock won’t open. There’s many reasons that door locks might malfunction; in this blog post, our expert lock technicians  will detail the most common issues that we regularly provide solutions for.

Sticky Locks

This issue might happen when dirt is caught inside the lock mechanism. By cleaning out gummy or sticky dirt from the lock with a cotton swab, and the application of lubricant (we advise use of a lock specific silicone or graphite based spray) most people can fix this issue themselves. Just make sure to insert the key and jiggle it in the lock after the lubricant application so that the lubricant gets its way around all aspects of the lock mechanism.

Weather Stripping

Poorly positioned or installed weather stripping might force the door into misalignment, preventing the lock from operating properly. If you notice your weather stripping looks askew, remove it and reposition it to match the shape of the door frame, and see if it helps your lock work again.

Jiggly Doorknobs

Doorknobs often loosen up over time, and need to be tightened up – but the tightening process is different based on what lock you have. The most common door locks, mortise locks, have a doorknob tightening process which consists of:

  • Loosening the knob’s screws

  • Holding the knob on the door’s other side and turning the loose knob clockwise until it’s tightened. Then, tighten the screw until it’s safely against the spindle’s flat side – afterwards, the knob should be able to turn freely.

  • If this solution doesn’t work right, remove the knob and check to see if the axle’s spindle has worn off and replace it. If the lockset is worn instead, purchase a new one to replace it.

Frozen Locks

A common issue during Winter months, this cause of lock malfunction can be remedied by heating up your key inside very hot water and placing it in the lock to help distribute the heat and thaw it – just make sure to wear protective gloves when handling the hot key and be careful with the hot water!

Turning Keys/Doorknobs but Lock is still Stuck

This is likely caused by an issue with the lock mechanism itself; remove and look to see if it has missing or worn out parts, and if this is the case, replace it.

Broken Off Keys

If keys break off inside the lock (a majorly common lock issue) contact a trustworthy local locksmith who can quickly remove it without causing damage to your lock itself.
