Securing your NYC Apartment

 nyc apartment security

There are many different security options available to make sure that your apartment is safe whether you are at home or not. SOS LOCKSMITH has listed below ways on securing your NYC apartment. You can choose to have an alarm system, have upgraded door and window locks, or you can even buy a dog that will bark loudly when someone is trying to enter your property.

Upgraded Locks

There are many different security locks available on the market by Medeco Locks and Mul-t-Lock. A barrel bolt is another good lock choice. Combination locks and keyless entry locks are also smart choices. Use high quality Grade-1 or Grade-2 locks on exterior doors to resist twisting, prying, and lock-picking attempts. A quality deadbolt lock will have a beveled casing to inhibit the use of channel-lock pliers used to shear off lock cylinder pins. A quality door knob-in-lock set will have a ‘dead latch’ mechanism to prevent slipping the lock with a shim or credit card.

Use a solid core or metal door for all entrance points
Use a quality, heavy-duty, deadbolt lock with a one-inch throw bolt
    Use a quality, heavy-duty, knob-in-lock set with a dead-latch mechanism
Use a heavy-duty, four-screw, strike plate with 3-inch screws to penetrate into a wooden door frame

Alarm Systems

A good alarm system will monitor all of the entry points into your apartment. Your door should have an alarm on it as well as all of the windows in your unit. You may also want to have security cameras installed inside of your apartment. There is a new technology available that will allow you to view your home while you are not there through your smartphone or computer. You can check in on your apartment while you are at work or even while you are on vacation if you have a high tech security system.

Security Lighting

Security lighting is a basic security feature that can be very helpful. Many apartments offer exterior security lighting in parking lots and around the entry points to the building. Bright lighting can deter crime and help people feel safer.

Electronic Key Cards

Electronic card access is a popular choice. When people use electronic cards, they can have confidence that no one else has a key to their apartment since key cards can be changed with ease. New residents receive a new card that wipes out the old tenants’ access. Cards can be changed very quickly and with ease. Key cards can also be given for other parts of an apartment complex. They can give people access to certain parts of an apartment like common areas or exercise rooms.

Security Gates

Security gates can be a nice security option. Gates can help apartment owners feel comfortable. They allow only people that live there or have permission to be there to be on the property.

Home Safes

There are great prices on safes at SOS Locksmith, having a safe in your home is a wise investment. Home safes are designed to keep the smash and grab burglar, dishonest nanny, cook or housekeeper from gaining access to important documents and personal property. Home safes need to be anchored into the floor or permanent shelving.  Here are few ways to make it work:

   – Use the safe everyday so it becomes routine
-Protect the safe code and change it occasionally
-Install it away from the master bedroom or closet

If you want to live in a secure NYC apartment, find a complex that has good locks, lighting, and that is in a good location or get security consultation from NYC Locksmith You can enjoy feeling comfortable in your apartment at all hours. You want to stay in a building that makes you feel secure.

Electronic Lock and Keyless Lock

  August Smart Lock

The term “smart lock” is a security superlative. These words really say, “here’s the best lock ever created.” Electronic locks and keyless locks promote a litany of hyped access control features. Sorting through these marketing words and getting to the nitty gritty and genuine qualities of these locks is a great task indeed. If you’re curious how these locks hold up to security threats and function as a whole, we have the information for you. Here’s what to look for when in the market for an electronic lock and keyless lock in NYC.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Let’s begin with the advantages. Electronic locks and keyless locks usually boast these great advantages:

E-Keys Access Control /Electronic Locks

•    Send an e-key to anyone, wherever they are and at any time.

•    Temporarily disable or permanently delete a user from the system.

•    E-keys have no expiration and can’t be lost.

•    Often traditional keys, and keyfobs are available

•    Access can be as simple as walking up to the door (RFID chip).

Usage Tracking

 •    See who sent or accepted an e-key

•    See who was enabled or disabled access

•    See who was deleted from the system

•    See real-time push notifications when someone knocks on the door.

•    Check to see if you door was locked or not for peace of mind.

The Disadvantages of electronic locks and keyless locks are several as well.

E-Keys/Electronic Lock

•    Electronic hacking

•    Battery or electricity dependency issues

•    Difficult to configure.

•    ANSI grades are lower against break-ins

Although we listed fewer disadvantages than advantages, these negatives are not to be missed in the big picture. Electronic hacking possess a great risk to ANSI grades and is currently little tested on the market. Also, electricity dependent devices, to this point are always slightly a hassle because of recharging issues. Lastly, bumping, prying, and damage threats aren’t publicly acknowledging threats for these yet. People would rather promote the convenience of the lock than anything else. What you don’t know: is your greatest disadvantage with new locking technologies. But, we’ve sorted through them all, and here are some of the locks we recommend to you.

2.      Lockey 2950 Keyless Mechanical Digital Mortise Locks

3.    Trilogy DL1225 Narrow Stile Digital Thumbturn Lock

4.      Kaba P2000 PowerPlex Self-Powered GREEN Electronic Lock

5.      Mul-TLock Code-It

 6.      Schlage Camelot Touchscreen Deadbolt

8.      Yale YRD240 Lock

9.      Schlage BE365 V CAM 619 Lock

10.  Arrow Revolutions Lock

We mentioned “smart locks” earlier; and in our opinion two stand alone to make the cut. August Locks and the Kēvo innovation. Both these devices are coupled with hands-free marketing as seen recently with the Nest Learning Thermostat. We chose these smart locks because they are the most advanced at adapting to other products while at the same time keeping you safe and secure as top-security should.

Keyless Door Lock

Remember: keyless door locks come in two forms. Usually they’re activated by a device like a phone, or an access card of something in the form of a keyfob or RFID chip. Keyless door locks are convenient for those who want to share, allow and monitor access digitally. But, keep in mind, that, before purchasing a keyless or electronic lock you know the materials of your door. Often certain exit doors, storefront doors and commercial doors won’t pair well with these technologies from a structural standpoint. Good luck on the market. Find a tried and true locksmith and enjoy the new security market.
