Retail Property Security Tips

There’s a set of practical protocols that any business owner can implement to exponentially increase the security at their commercial property. In this blog entry, the commercial security experts here at SOS Locksmith will offer you some easy security tips especially formulated for managers of retail properties.

Utilize Visible Deterrent Items

A fantastic way of preventing crime before it happens is to signal to criminals that your property is ready to protect itself against crime. A fantastic visual deterrent is to post up signs that announce your property is protected by 24/7 visual surveillance. Add height markers to all of your door frames, and place stickers on cash registers that announce that all extra cash is placed into a drop safe or safety deposit box that even your employees don’t have the ability to access.

Visibility

Make sure that all areas of your store are visible. Keep all your displays low to the ground so you can have a better line of sight of what’s going on in the store. If there’s blind spots in the physical space, install a wide angle mirror so you can monitor that area. Don’t install big window displays that impede your visibility.

Employee Training

Discuss burglary and crime with your employees, and train them to see the signs of a robbery like a criminal waiting for other customers to leave before coming up to the register, or waiting outside the store right before closing time. Teach your employees how to safely behave in the event of a robbery, and what the protocol should be hypothetically after one occurs.

Timing Changes

Change the route and time that you bring your deposit to the bank so criminals who may be watching you cannot establish a pattern. Never carry your cash in your hand, and ideally, have more than one person go to the drop off at once.

Security Doors

Install high quality security gates on your business. Additionally, make sure that all doors are protected by high quality deadbolts.

Alarms

Make sure a high quality alarm system that automatically talks with the local police departments – this is way better than an alarm that’s simply connected to a monitoring service. If you have a silent alarm system, ensure that it’s outfit with a panic button that employees know how to access in the event of a robbery.
