Situations in which to Re-Key Locks

It’s a tricky debate sometimes to decide whether a lock needs to be rekeyed, or whether lock changes are a better bet. These different services provide different, albeit similar seeming results, and are best called for during different sets of circumstances. In this blog entry, the rekeying service experts here at SOS Locksmith will detail the situations in which rekeying is ideal, and the scenarios in which lock changes, or other services, are the better option for your home or business.

Here at SOS Locksmith we recommend rekeying your locks as soon as moving into a new property. However there’s many situations in which lock replacement is a better option.

Best Times to Change Locks

When you change locks, all of the lock / door hardware will be removed and replaced with brand new hardware. Lock changes are the best option if your existing locks are worn out, degraded, or experiencing constant malfunctions. Lock changing is a great option as well in situations where you want to get a newer and more modern lock – like an electronic lock or smart lock – installed at your property. Another common situation in which lock changes are ideal are if the locks throughout your home are made from any different brands, and you’d prefer to open them all with a single key (a master key.)

When to Rekey Locks

Rekeying locks involves the alteration of the lock mechanism, making it so that your old key won’t open it any longer, and you will require a brand new key. Rekeying is a good choice if you’ve simply lost a key, or if all of your locks are from the same brand but use different keys. Rekeying is a popular choice – and in our professional opinion – a complete must if you’re moving into a brand new home, as you never know what other people might still have a copy of your keys.
