Solo Living Home Security

Living on your can be incredibly peaceful, with tons of private time to be productive (or just eat ice cream in your underwear.) Here’s a guide to some essential home security tips for solo living, as prepared by the residential security experts at SOS Locksmith.

Install a Home Security System and Smart Lock

Make sure to get a home security system and smart lock, even if you live alone. This can help notify you if your pets get out, or if the doors of your home suddenly open when you’re not home. It’s fantastic for letting in delivery people remotely, when you’re not home, and even allow for houseguests to enter your home through pre-set programmable codes. This helps add a strong layer of protection to your home that gives you peace of mind in knowing that your home is protected even when you’re not there.

Always Keep in Touch with Friends or Family

If you expect to be away for an extended amount of time, let trusted friends or family members know – both so they don’t worry, but also so that they can check up on your property once in a while and ensure it’s secure. You can give them spare keys to do so. It couldn’t hurt to make friends with your neighbors as well, helping encourage a strong sense of community supported collective security in your building or block.

Don’t Advertise

Don’t publicly post on social media information that notifies strangers that you live alone and/or will be going away for a while. This can unwittingly serve as an advertisement for potential thieves or burglars to make your home or apartment a crime target. Ask people to housesit for you if you’re going to be away for a long period of time.
